I don't identify with him (especially not with the tall tales) but I think I would have liked him.

Maybe Karpov in the 70's, but not nowadays, that's for sure. Lots of interesting personalities in chess history anyway.
Capablanca. Probably doesn't stack up well when you're talking about the greatest of all time, but he made playing master-level chess look easy.
