Spassky was a stud.  Unfortunately, he's best known for losing to Fischer....but anyone in that day and age would've gotten their butt kicked by Bobby.

He was a gutsy player....willing to play the King's Gambit.  He also added a lot to the theory behind the closed Sicilian.

Very true!

He was the tenth World Chess Champion, holding the title from 1969 to 1972.

Spassky won the Soviet Chess Championship twice outright (1961, 1973), and twice more lost in playoffs (1956, 1963), after tying for first during the event proper. He was a World Chess Championship Candidate on seven occasions (1956, 1965, 1968, 1974, 1977, 1980, and 1985).

"Was Spassky good?"

For starters, it is not "was" but "is". Secondly, it is not "good" but "great". Thirdly, it is not Spassky but Kasparov.

And finally, the answer is YES.

???  so the question now is...is kasparov great?  no he's retired.

Spassky was not just strong, but very strong.Perhaps,if the the Soviet system had not been behind him demanding this and that he would have fared far better against Bobby Fischer in 1972.I feel so because of a recent interview in which he made his feelings against the Soviet authorities at that time clear.Spassky even had a plus record against Bobby before the title clash. He was feared for his incredible middlegame skills.

Go through the databases (f.e. www.chesslive.de) and you'll see many nice victories over top players such as Fischer, Petrosian, Kasparov, Karpov...

It's his victory over Larsen that really impressed me:
