Wow! Some comments here were a bit uncalled for. I believe we should always try to help each other in each opportunity, through positive discussion, teaching and learning from each other. That's so awesome in and off itself!
Anyway, albeit some comments which explained this weren't the most cool, the general concept here is that until the game is over, it is not over. This means that anything can happen in the chessboard, and each player has the full right to keep playing on or end the game right away, either by checkmate or by resigning.
In case a player doesn't resign in a lost position, the other player can still play on regardless of whether they checkmate or not. There's no abuse in just keep playing the game for either side.
