March 6 Carissa Yip sits across from Godin and the clock starts. Blitz chess. She waits. She strikes the timer, her plastic wristwatch peeking from under her sleeve. Godin puts his head on his hands and counters. The pint-sized chess master calls his move “cheesy.” At another point, she mutters, “You saw that coming to you beeeeouch man.”

Is she saying what I think she is saying? Lets sound this out. Be-ouch. Three times fast now. I really hope I'm missing something here...

Yes because Lisa is sexist and dishonorable for trying to besmirch Nigel Short.

An I don't care what Lisa's fans say with excuses like Oh Lisa had good intentions. Yeah Hilter believed he had good intentions in World War 2 as well.

A better future for chess where women beat men?

Do women actually believe men take joy in beating women or children at a chess board?

Seeing a little 12 year old cry when they are about to get checkmated is one of the most saddest things in chess.

Seeing a lady who just got all glamoured up with a new hair cut, make up, and happy smile in the beginning of a chess game. Than you watch as the game proceeds their position starts to get worse their happiness begins to leave to become sad. The terrible board position begins to suck out the joy and happiness from their body, just like the winter breeze sucking out the life of a lone summer rose leaving nothing more than saddness and despair. An before you checkmate they will smile. For many women don't cry like children when they are about to lose even though they want too. Instead what they do is they smile. However, the smile doesn't go un-noticed. For the smile that is given is not the same as the smile they shown at the begin of the chess game. For it is a fake smile known as the Smile of Saddness.

Men take no joy from making children cry or women show fake smile's. If that was all chess was about. Chess would of became a dead sport long ago. For many men are raised to love and protect women and children not beat them in anything.

An when it happens they take no joy from it. Many men hide it or don't acknowledge their games a great deal. Some may save them but they do not dwell on them.

An you want to usher in a time were women beat men as much as men beat men.

That is the Legacy you wish upon to the future children of this world. To tell women/girls to beat men/boys. It will foster nothing more than hatred and resentment.

An that is the world they want one filled with Hatred, Dishonor, and Resentment.

I do not agree.

I do not wish for a future where Women beat Men, Men beat Women, Or Men beat Men becuase I don't believe that should be their motivation.

If one side loses it shall be becuase of love. Their love for the game that should be their motivation. They won not becuase they was trying to beat someone. It was becuase they simply loved the game more than their opponent. They studyed, they did their preparation, they did their calcuations, all for the love of the game. An on that given day it proved to be effective.

Um...I think you guys are getting a little too crazy about this thing. My Sensei is a pretty conservative dude but he takes great joy in me stomping some of the bigger dudes in the dojo. We all respect each other and none of the regulars get particularly upset when I get the best of them. In fact, he admitted back in the day that he got beat by a woman because she was skilled and tough. And to repeat, this guy is socially conservative. Yes, people shouldn't play a game to beat up on a class of people, but that shouldn't stop said people from competing against each other. Geesh.

I wonder how old some of you hot headed people are. You guys (and I use that term for men and women) sound like you're writing position papers for a high school assignment the way some of you talk. No offense. Just 2 cents from an old fart of a woman with teenage kids. :)

He takes great joy in seeing you do it. Becuase he is happy to see you have learned what he has taught and used it effectively.

An I assure you my writing positional papers from high school many years ago were terrible. I had so many grammer errors my English teacher ran out of Red Ink she started grading my paper with a Red Ink Penn mid way she ran out of Red Ink and had to get another pen. Which was Green. So When it was all finished and done I had so much Red and Green Ink on my paper it looked like my paper had the Christmas spirit. All was missing was a yellow star at the top and it would of looked like a Christmas Tree

Sorry but I doubt she will ever be a chess legend like Nigel Short.

Don't type such stuff here!  She could be lurking in these forums and such a quote would hurt her feelings.

Wait....HITLER......Lisa points to an awesome female chess prodigy, and you go FULL HITLER - may Godwin have mercy on your soul.

AlisonHart

Here's the deal:

It's not about women being better than men - it's that women are sick of having to defend themselves from windbags like Nigel Short, and we want a female world champion so that all of this ridiculous, assinine, annoying noise about lady brains not being 'logical enough' and lady emotions being too intense and lady parts having too many complications will go the fk away. We know that many men in the commnity (probably a majority) are NOT sexist windbags, and the ire is not directed at them - it's just a general frustration that in 2015 we're having a debate that ended everywhere else by 1985.

Here's the secret: It's not about men AT ALL - female empowerment has NOTHING TO DO with men. That's the point! We love you guys, we want you around, we want you to mercilessly kick the crap out of us at the chessboard (sometimes), but we also want to be allowed a little bit of a 'horray' for a girl that might make a splash in the chess scene someday. Because every time we have to hear the same tired garbage about our tiny tiny lady brains, it's like nails on chalkboard, and we wonder "Why DID I spend 5000 hours of my life trying to get good at a game that is culturally unappreciative of what I have to offer?"

Lycine

The fact the op "lisa_zhang_tok" felt the need to manipulate with some degree of conceit, Nigel Short's actual words, into something she feels more comfortable with expressing, reveals she has an underlying inadequacy or inferiority. Maybe she is emotionally resentful of her condition of being born female.

SheridanJupp

"emotionally" resentful...... ->~∑≥_≤)  Headshot

AlisonHart

I've read the article - it begins with a brief history of women in chess and ends with saying that women are ill equipped to back a car out of a garage.......it also says that men are idle and academically deficient - which is insulting and false in its own rite.

Nigel should stick to trading bishops for knights and leave the gender theory to people who aren't idle and academically lacking (male, female, trans, and pan alike).

SheridanJupp

Have you seen the videos where women try to park a car??? It's true...... 9 times out of 10, when you see some silly/disastrous manouvering in traffic, it's a woman behind the wheel. Either that, or a drunkard. Honestly, that's no joke or preconceived idea. I've seen it many, many times. Why is that? And do you think this relates to chess skills at all?

AlisonHart

Troll kitty is trollish - I respond in the appropriate manner "meow"

SheridanJupp

Heowno.... I'm just a regular customer. What makes you say I'm a militant? I'm just an inquisitive little hobbit/cat/human/slacker.
