Soviet authorities decide to punish Korchnoi and Karpov for their unapproved contact with Westerners.

Later, the Soviet authorities back off of Karpov, turning all the animosity toward Korchnoi.

There was a kid in my first grade class who used to eat library paste. I never saw him in second grade. Maybe he stuck behind.

Now THAT'S an anecdote!

Many years ago I was playing in a tournament and in the first round a young lad was playing against a young girl. The boy's father looked over his shoulder and said to him "you'll win this one, she's only a girl". The girl won. In each following round the girl's father came over to the board before the game started and said to her "don't worry, he's only a boy". She was the only girl playing in the tournament and she won it.

Was the girl's last name "Polgar"?

I really wish I'd played in tournaments with Polgars, but alas no, it was not.

One time Kasparov had dinner at a restaurant. The table had a checkered table cloth. It took him half an hour to pass the salt.

Once at San Remo, Alekhine was so drunk that he fell forward while seated at the board and a pawn got wedged up his nose. Bogoljubov tried to claim a touch move violation, but since Alekhine dislodged it by holding closed his other nostril and blowing it out, he won out on the claim by showing that he didn't touch it with his hand.
