What does it take to be good?

Hello,

I am running into a very strange problem. I have been playing chess for quite some times, I do well for a while and then it s back to beginner play I feel. I mostly play Yahoo and my rating will go as high as 1250 but then back all the way down to 1050... I will go on 7 to 10 winning streaks to get back down to lose as many.

My problem is that I am not very consistent I guess, and that I feel confortable only with black and king pawn openings...

Any recommendations?

It's hard to diagnose the problem without more information. What does "quite some time" mean? 1 year? 10 years?

Are you a member of a chess club in real life? Have you ever played in real-life tournaments? Or are you a casual player? Have you read any chess books? If so, which ones?

With some more info, I'm sure many people here could provide excellent advice.

Obviously, you need to get comfortable with white and with non-king pawn openings Tongue out.

More info is needed though.
