ivanchuk, he lives on his own planet. he could move his fellow earthlings there while keeping the aliens distracted in the game.
What GM would you pick to save Earth?

Fischer in his prime was the GOAT player in the history of chess.
So, FISCHER.
Capablanca is my second pick.
Potentially offcourse I would include the legendary Morphy.

The powers that be, our government leaders, those wizards of words, have taken the majority vote and are preparing to send the aliens the name of our champion... Magnus. A reply is expected sometime tomorrow, the game will be broadcast here and all over the world. This truly will be the game of all history. Stay tuned!

The leaders of Earth received a transmission early this morning from the aliens in response to our transmission naming Magnus as our Champion.
Their transmission sounded like laughter.
When asked for clarification, the aliens responded and explained that the challenge wasn't meant for man, it was sent to the dolphins. They claim that any species that still need physical representations of the board and pieces in order to play could not possibly offer even the slightest challenge. They further explained that true chess is played in the mind, not on a board, it's an abstract game that goes beyound physical boundaries and humankind is centuries away from the mental discipline needed to achive true chess.
The good news is the Dolphins have responded with a champion to defend our planet.

Great news! We won!
Well, errrrr, the dolphins won. The aliens were out on the defensive right at the start when Eeeekcheeeka, the dolphin champion opened with the crab offensive, quickly using both bishops in a pincher move that kept the alien champion defending and unsuspecting the final tide within tide that led to a decisive mate.
The Earth is saved, the aliens will reroute the intergalactic highway as promised!
The dolphins however, are leaving. They are relocating to the great chess planet E4, where advanced chess players of every race and species gather. After graciously winning the match, Eeeekcheeeka was asked how she became so profienct in chess, to which she responded, "All I do is swim, eat fish, and play chess, what else is there?"
Earth received a final message as the last dolphin boarded the transport, a message to us humans, a final tribute to the great Douglas Adams...
"So long and thanks for all the fish."

lol, you are the king of Douglas Adams references! I would have had the mice do it instead of the dolphins though.

I though not needing physical pieces or a board to play was a nice twist, chess...played unaltered in the mind. Besides, this whole experience was part of the continued experiment being conducted by the mice. Lol, nice to meet another fan.
