My coach said it was a rule. What is it?

If your coach thinks that is a rule, then it is time for a new coach, preferably somebody that knows the rules or knows how to use a computer to find the rules at least. Just goggle "rules of chess", no need for a forum even.

HorribleTomato

I think it used to be in certain positions when the forced win would take over 50 moves, then it turned into 125 moves. But they changed that.

These move rules are so stupid. Chess is a complex game, we have a right to play it out and see what happens!

FIRE MY COACH THEN

That rule existed up to the middle age, when chess was still played with arabic rules. I guess Lucena, Greco or perhaps Philidor eliminated it.

I googled the 125 move rule and the only thing related to the search was this chess.com forum.

Fritz 12 had a 252 move rule in it. That it was considered a draw after 252 moves without victory. However, I did find an actual game that went 293 moves, so it doesn't seem like an official rule.

I've had fritz say 290 move rule. They should make that setting changeable, where you can enter the number of moves or make it unlimited.

If you haven’t been to the bathroom before the 125th move, then you have to go or forfeit the game. This rule prevents older players from wetting themselves.

No, if a game goes on for more than 125 moves, than every time someone moves they lose a dollar until somebody resigns.

Did you know that chess tournaments make $100 a week because of this?

That’s not true

DuckDuckChess6

It was a joke.

EndgameEnthusiast2357

No, that's entirely incorrect, each player loses one more dollar than the previous move, until someone resigns or cannot pay off the debt.
