One of my favorites is the now defunct Inside Chess which was published by Yasser Seirawan. Yeah, NIC is great. But nowadays, online -zines are the main competitors. Check out Europe Echecs some time.
EDIT: Added: You didn't say what languages you read, what skill level you are, or what you are looking for in a chess magazine. I think both Reb and just presumed you are interested in articles discussing the latest opening innovations, endgames, and chess news.
Two other websites that may interest you are ChessCafe.com and, depending on how serious a chess player you are, chesspublishing.com.

Reb, I never saw it in English. But if you read even a smattering of French you can probably get quite a bit out of it. It has fantastic annotations from most of the world's elite players.
And, if you do read French, you may enjoy its prose! Some of the French GMs really go wild with their descriptions of the events!

Here's an example, and it's just the first game I saw, not cherry picked:
Le grand-maître polonais Mateusz Bartel a mangé du lion dans ce championnat d'Europe. Après s'être offert la tête de David Navara lors de la ronde 6, il accroche le scalp de Ian Nepomniachtchi à sa ceinture pour terminer son parcours en beauté. Dans le premier diagramme, le grand-maître russe vient de commettre l'irréparable par 13...Tc8?. Bartel connait ses classiques et joue le très fort 14.Cf5! exf5 15.exf5+ Rf8 16.Ce4 Fc6 17.Cxd6 Dc7 18.Cxc8 Dxc8 19.Td4, deuxième diagramme. En cas d'échange des Dames le Fou n'a plus de cases ! 26...Da5 La Dame noire préfère donc reprendre son mouvement pendulaire... 27.f4 Dc5+ 28.Te3 Fxg2 29.hxg5 hxg5 30.fxg5 Th1+ 31.Rxg2 Txd1 32.gxf6+, ça sent le mat maintenant... 32...Rxf6 33.Dh4+ Rg7 35.f6+ Rg8 36.Dg3+ Rf8 37.Db8+ De8 38.Th3 Td2+ 39.Rf3 1-0.

I used to get that magazine sometimes when I was in Germany but I could only go over the games as I know no french . The brits used to have a good magazine I think was simply titled Chess , don't know if its still being published though . I also used to like Inside Chess that you mentioned and hated when it went under ...
New in Chess and Chess Life are good. The great thing about Chess Life is it comes free with a USCF membership, which is also inexpensive.
I think not knowing french and using Google translate makes the prose even more exciting!

Chess Informant and Chessbase Magazine have an excellent reputation. Though Chess Informant is recently going through a rebranding and I prefer the Chessbase Opening Encyclopedia to the ECO.

New In Chess is really good
Chess Life is a tabloid rag now. All ads, and the "news" is at times months old.
do these chess magazines have any pictorials in them?

I think you may enjoy Chessbase.com. It has many free articles and pictorials. And, the price is right.
