What is chess? Game or sport?

Yeah, perhaps, though the complete and total lack of any kind of physical exertion as a requirement to play the game certainly sees me on the side of the dictionary definition of sport.

Chess is the best game, and about the worst sport (if it even was one). Why are we so keen to devalue it?

I would argue that Chess is the best Sport !.

Cool Venn diagramme. Did you draw that yourself?
Yeah, ages ago in one of the earlier incarnations of this thread.

And if, before arguing about sport or game, you define what is a sport and what is a game. After you could put chess, soccer, gulf or what else in the good case.
For me chess is Art

Who said they did? Plus you say man did not walk on the moon everywhere here.

Nope. The exact definition differs throughout everyone's minds. But there are no exact boundaries between game and sport. Although you could check up various definitions to mess up your mind. And this messing up led me to create this thread. Yet, no conclusion in sight, ZeeghamShaarih!

That's really what all of this comes down to. For some reason there is a fairly widespread perception that Sports are superior to Games and because chess is such a great game there are many who would like to see it "elevated" to the status of sport. It is this faction that fundamentally and continually undermines the definition of the word "sport" in order to make this the case.
To be clear: The difference between Sport and Game is on of kind, not one of degree.
Can we please stop this nonsense now?

There you go again TheGrobe !. You again say "Chess is such a great game , but again I disagree ( I say it's a great sport ) , so perhaps it would be best now to end this nonsense" , as you say.

I'm not even sure I can actually tell what you are saying at all, since you insist on playing fast and loose with definitions.

no..nnnnnoooo..noooo..ooo/ only one thing more:
definition of sport it seems that it is soome 'Black Hole' or 'God Particle',,,
def. = game = sport=game..............................now u can stop. (hope no one start: whether chess invented on earth or moon?)
Rock climbing is a sport, but it is certainly not a game.
Pacman is a game, but it is certainly not a sport.

You seem to be so sure that you are right , and that the International Olympic Committee are wrong - seems like you and I are gonna have to agree to disagree.
