what is sandbagging?

Care to elaborate Snookslayer? What exactly did I contradict here? Did I not mention the bottom line? It's cheating! What are you tripping out on?

It's NOT in the rules, Snookslayer! That's the point I'm trying to make! That's the argument! There's no rule that says you can't do it, so they do it, thinking they're not violating any rules, but they know it's wrong, and do it, anyway. Does it have to go so far as chess.com to make it part of the fair policy to say you cannot sandbag, or are players going to continue to do it because they know they can get away with it, that's another topic, I suppose.

I think sandbagging is most certainly cheating. If you're not following the rules and playing the game like its intended to be played, it's cheating...bottom line. Stop and consider this: If you have a player who is displaying an ELO of a whopping 250, but was secretly a player of 2500, clearly and easily in the top 1 to 2 percent percentile, and intentionally dropped his rating so low, WHY!?? So they can claim a big number winning streak on their stats page. How is this NOT cheating? That, or just the satisfaction of knowing none of their opponents are going to stand a chance against them for awhile. I actually have less tolerance for a sandbagger then a cheater. Cheaters cheat because they're desperate to win. Sandbaggers win, but want something more then the win, they want bragging rights, or they do it for other inappropriate, personal reasons. No matter how you look at it, sandbagging is cheating. It's also bad sportsmanship, because you're gaining unfair advantages. Play the game fairly! There's no rule that says you can't sandbag, but there's nothing that says you can, either, and you know deep down inside it's wrong. So why do it?

Ya typed all that... only to contradict your own argument.

Hes saying that there isnt a rule and thats bad and that there should be a rule

He was using a counterargument. He's saying that even though the rules don't ban sandbagging, we all know it's not the right thing to do, and thus we shouldn't do it even if the rules let us.

"Breaking the rules is cheating."

"Sandbagging is cheating."

"Sandbagging isn't against the rules."

No wonder the Brits lost WW2.

No they didn't get your facts straight.

Sandbagging sucks. One time I was playing against this guy who was a "600," but he was destroying me even though I was like 400 points above him. He was playing at the level of a 1500. It just takes the fun and point out of the game.

Sandbagging is more than unethical. Both USCF and FIDE will sanction a player for sandbagging.

In OTB there is the temptation to sandbag in order to win tournament prizes. Tounanents that have class prizes $500 or higher are particularly subceptible.

I don't think too many tournaments have class prizes under $500. Instead they tend to have broader groups unrated to 1200, under 1800, and open, which are less likely to attract a sandbagger.

I played a 1500 blitz player in a <1199 rapid tournament; is that fair?

Sandbagging as far as the site is concerned, is when you intentionally suppress your rating in order to enter a tournament in a lower category. So say there are prizes for under 1000, and 1000 and over. You are ranked 1100 but go on a losing streak to enter the under 1000 category.

Cheaters?Sandbaggers? And now smurfs?

hahaha... looks like characters in some kind of  fairytale world.

Anyway... thanks for making me a lil’ wiser!

I hate them all...

I am new at chess... and now that I know all of this...

Sometimes I don’t know if I played a really good game or that my opponent lost on purpose...

Hey I have a question, I don't compete regularly in public chess tournaments but, I play lots of chess online. In fact, I only play chess online. But, I registered my USCF membership and my rating was 1340. However, my online rating is like mid 1700s. So, I entered a local tournment on National Chess Day and took home a 2nd place trophy. One of my friends there said that they accused me of sandbagging so he had to explain to them that I don't compete like everyone else does.

Sandbagging. its deceiving your opponent into proving your a weaker player than you really are. in a tournament the whole idea is to have similar skilled players face off competitively. Sandbagging disregards the entire reason for that concept.
Now the funny part about chess is ratings can fluctuate from time to time and some times people take a while to bounce back often having their rating dip into lower rating bracket. This is normal but to do it intentionally is where the problem is. And because of the nature of the “beast”. Sometimes its hard to tell if some one is sandbagging or simply recovering from a bad downward spiral.

I've been playing these 1/0 tournaments in which my rating of around 1200 (bullet) plummets because I can't keep up with these insanely fast players. Once it hits below 1010 I'm (temporarily) banned from playing (I had the message of "sandbagging" a few times). Yet, I see other people playing at my level with ratings between 100 and 900 playing the same tournaments.

If your rating drops too much from your peak in a pool over a certain time period, I think 90 days, you won't be able to play in tournaments in that pool. It has little to do with the actual rating, but with that change in rating.

I’m with you in a similar manner.

I am experiencing 1200 as a tough spot in rapid and blitz because I do not feel established but competitive and experimental in the 1200-1500 bracket so I remain persistent.

Good job on bullet by the way. That’s an even tougher bracket to shoot for consistency. Seems like not all 1200 are equal. 1200 bullet > blitz > rapid from my 6 months of personal experience.

I’m kinda worried now. I had a really good friend playing on my account so he drove my ratings up but I am losing them quickly. Will I get reported for sandbagging if I keep losing?

Tbh, in my opinion this is a form of cheating.
Your friend should make his own account.

Kinda funny .... happy.png. Worrying of being reported for sandbagging while you are confessing you were cheating.

Maybe you did not meant to do bad, but can you imagine if I would ask some GM to play some games on my account?

It would not be fair towards “my” opponents!
