I once won against a CM in blitz (I am unrated). He trashed me every other game we played though, oh well
What is the biggest upset in OTB play ever?
Just as an aside: if you suspect you're very underrated, I wouldn't come in trying to take down a few big guns as I imagine (and have heard) that could be very annoying and irritating to a highly rated player.
It may sound tempting, how you'd have this david vs goliath story afterwards of how you were only x-rating and beat some highly rated player, but it really isn't in the spirit or the logic of the rating system, and it could take months or more for the highly rated people to recover depending on how many times you played them.
Biggest I know is this nearly 800 point upset of 1700 vs 2500:

Apparently her clock wasn't set with the delay or increment it was supposed to have. This is what I heard. So in terrible time trouble she went from winning (or better) to losing.

I did beat a Norwegian ELO 1605 (fide 1814) when I was unrated Fide and 878 Norwegian in an otb longchess turnament (90 min + 30 sec pr move).
He did no obvious blunders, but made at least two decisions that I didnt like, and got punished for them. He didnt realize that his best option (with white aginst a lowrated player) was to fight for a draw, and pushed to hard.

Once I lost to a 600 as a 1600, but he was a pretty young kid whose probably gonna be way better than me someday

Maybe a combination of time pressure and poor concentration after the politically-motivated forfeit.

But the chances of the underrated player winning is already very low.

Post your biggest upset.
I drew Tal in a simul in 1988, when he was ranked 4th in the world.
That was just a simul, though.

This is pretty impressive actually. Did you write down the game?

I've got a copy of it somewhere, yes... perhaps packed away at my sister's house.
It was 32 years ago, and I've moved house several times since then.
The discussion about the possibility of a 1300 player beating a 2700 got me thinking. What is the largest upset based on rating point difference in classical OTB tournament play? Mine was a 1984 win against a 2137 (I was 1654 at the time), a 483 point differential. More recently I had a win against a 2247 (I was 1885), but that one was G/10. Post your biggest upset.
