I played without learning openings, I played puzzles just for fun, not really thinking deep. I took lessons in but made me boring so I stopped on few videos for beginner. But somehow I got to 2100 ELO and I'm still improving. Hope that helps.
Well as the story goes, capablanca picked up the rules just by watching his father play a few games. Then he was able to beat him.

Yea I got to 2250 without studying a single opening, no deep thinking in puzzles. I have just started studying chess this month 😄
