But these are just supplements. true they work but that doesn't mean they're dope.

Are top GMs allowed to use this stuff? Just curious.

Ah, I think I found the banned list for FIDE. Interestingly, caffeine could be a problem if it's above a certain level in a urine test.

EscherehcsE

I was looking at a review of OptiMind. It's a proprietary blend of substances, and no dosages are given for the ingredients. (For example, caffeine is listed, but you have no idea how much is in there.) Why in the world would people take this stuff when you don't know what the dosages are?

Edit - Oh, wait - It at least lists the caffeine content in the warning message. I didn't notice that at first.

Proprietary blends in the supplement industry are almost always a rip off.

pdve

no man this stuff really works.

been using for more than a year now.

Do you have to take them every day, or just on tournament days?

pdve

Well. It is a cumulative thing. It takes a while to work. You may feel no effects for the first week and then boom you're getting puzzles right, planning the correct way during the game and calculating well. If you take it occasionally it will not work. You have to maintain it.

pdve

no there are no hallucinations it's pretty benign stuff.

pdve

yeah true

pdve

how do you know it's garbage. have you tried it?

Anyone who would take drugs like mirtazipine (use for severe mental disorders) or cabergoline (inhibits prolactin hormone levels, used to treat pituitary cancer) in order to MAYBE solve more chess tactics (probably not and certainly unproven), is out of his friggin mind, and pdve, I think you have already provided enough evidence to show us that whatever you are taking is NOT making you smarter.

Most of that "brain boost" garbage is just snake oil. Like @ghost_of_pushwood eloquently said, good old-fashioned neurons are the best

And if you can also go on a keto diet, it's even better. The brain will be running mostly on ketones, which burn cleaner than glucose. You'll be more alert with less brain fog, and you'll have better mental (and physical) stamina. Another big advantage is that, other than the change in diet, it's absolutely free.

pdve

Well mirtazapine is a regular run of the mill antidepressant and cabergoline is an anti Parkinsonian agent. It's a long story why I started taking these medicines.

pdve

One thing you have to realize about the pharmaceutical industry is that they always have 10000 lawyers ready to sue them for anytihng they can find.  This is the reason why they list these side effects. You will find these side effects listed for any drug on the market. They just need to be able to say that they already warned you.

pdve

good for you

I need better tactics, better king safety, and better back-rank mate vision. Is there a tactical, king safety, back-rank mate nootropic available?

Cabergoline will make you more tactical. Piracetam more positional and slow. Mirtazapine will make you use your bishops well. Modafinil will help in calculation.
