I ask "What squares did my opponents left move leave unprotected,"
and "What are 2 possible move that my opponent might make in response,"
I ask "What squares did my opponents left move leave unprotected,"
and "What are 2 possible move that my opponent might make in response,"
"Why did my opponent move there? What's he trying to accomplish?"
"Am I hanging my queen by doing this?"
Any checks, captures, or threats? (Says the man who just hung his knight in a 3 day per move game...must have been the time pressure )
Gain as much space as possible. Then proceed to start sealing off areas of potential activity. Finally either attempt to win by time or make a break and unleash the spearheads of doom.
"What is the weakness of my opponent's last move?"
"Are there any tactics? (loose pieces, pins, forcing lines, etc.)"
If I see a good possible move to achieve a winning position. "Is there something better?"
Once I get a winning position. "How can I prevent my opponent from getting any counterplay?"
"What are my opponent's strategic plans? What are my strategic plans?" (usually includes a pawn break)
Playing as black. "How can I keep my pieces active?"
"What is my poorest (least active/ can be improved) piece?"
I really want a smoke; need a smoke, need, need, need. Ok, what's the worst he can do? If I go there, then, ok... wait! no, then he goes... oh wait! No. Yes. Awww that's not it. He'll go there, then that. So... go there instead? It might work. Well it's probably the best I got... I need a cigarette...
I was wondering what thinks I could ask myself before I move, anything that is reasonable is great. It is one way I'm preparing for a tournament. Thanks for any comments!
