I've been contemplating returning to learning. So, I registered an account, had a brief look around the site, and then proceeded to get digitally b**** slapped by a (java script?) automated game. Well, here's to humbling returns...

I was in a chess club during my high school years (class of '90) and really enjoyed it back then. But, as the automated game just proved, I seem to have let my game lapse a bit. I'd really like to get started again, but I'm not too sure where to start. This web site is sort of overwhelming on the first visit. I'm certainly not complaining about that, it's very impressive. But since I'm seriously feeling like a beginner all over again, anyone care to share some advice on how to get back in the saddle? Should I just sign up for some punishment from live players? Hit the tutorials? Go back for more digital humiliation?

Any advice would be appreciated. Until then, I'll be just be bouncing around the site, taking in the sights! Tongue out

Sweeeeet! I just took a look at that page and I feel like a kid on Christmas. That's a perfect place for me to start. Thanks much!

Most people on site will advise you that tactics training is the quickest way to sharpen your board vision and improve.  Consider a premium membership if you're really serious about getting back into the game.  The ChessMentor has some outstanding courses, the videos are both a serious educational tool and great entertainment (check out Danny Rensch's live sessions in particular), and the Tactics  Trainer is a source of unending humiliation.  Have fun.
