What's my rating?

When someone asks you your rating, what do you answer? Your blitz rating? Your daily chess rating? I do know that there are different ratings for different time controls, but is there any benchmark, any rating that comes on top and let's you see a player's overall ability to play chess?

I guess it matters where you are when someone asks you. In the offline world, people have usually been talking about an over the board rating.

When people write in to the forum here on Chess.com, they generally cite whatever rating they have for the type of online chess they play most.  A large percentage seem oblivious to the potential for confusion.

The next question is how to translate a Chess.com bullet blitz or live standard rating into a FIDE or USCF over the board rating. There is no reliable formula. Some people here have done some decent work based on self reported over the board ratings but it is open to significant questions.

Participate in rated events in your area. You'll normally be able to find a USCF tournament within driving distance of most places in the US at least a few times a year, more than that in cities.

The one that I have the highest score.

I am too used to 10 minute games, compared to other time controls.
