Ruz Lopez IS better by FAR

Many GM's play it

Many players consider it the Strongest Opening of all time

An opening that's better for 2700-rated players isn't necessarily better for 1100-rated players.

Suppose that I was just learning to drive, and I told you:

"I'm going to practice driving at 300 kilometers per hour, just like Lewis Hamilton! After all... he's the Formula-One world champion! He must know how to drive better than some dumb driving instructor who has never won a major race!"

Would you think that I had a good point, or that I was crazy?

They're both variations of the king's pawn (ruy lopez and scotch game)

Hi guys so I'm new to chess as a whole. Which opening would you recommend to give me a upper hand?

AvroVanquish

I really feel like beginners should play open position to improve their tactical prowess. So between Ruy and Scotch, Scotch would be my recommendation. However, Ruy Lopez aims to get the most advantage out of the opening and is very rich with lots of ideas for both sides, that's why many GM's play it.

I prefer Vienna Gambit for beginners though tongue.png

Scotch leads to more open games and immediate tactical possibilities, so if you’re a tactical player/want to improve at tactics, the Scotch is better for you. If you’re a positional player/want to improve at strategy play the Ruy Lopez. If you want to play for a win the Ruy Lopez offers the best chances as it leads to very rich postions where both sides can manouver for a very long time and try to outplay their opponent

Super GMs play Ruy Lopez more, but generally speaking both openings are fine. For sub GM level it doesn't make any difference. Choose the one you find more interesting to play. happy.png

What openings GM's prefer for, those opening we should also memorise and be preferred to because GM's know which openings are stronger
