plastic is easy to clean/maintain

I prefer wood, definitely. For pieces though, I like polymer - wooden pieces deteriorate with time.
I go for the glass- like pieces and boards.
Wood, as it has such a satisfying "thump" when the pieces land.

I like wood but use plastic because wood breaks when it falls more often and generally costs more too....

Actually, here in the northeastern U.S. there are more trees now than ever...by 1790 almost all the trees here were chopped down....used to make logs, charcoal for steel, ships, etc....then they discover coal and all the trees grew back, I used to be an environmental consultant back in the 1980s and 1990s before most people even knew what it was...

Vinyl is a type of plastic..
Vinyl is not a natural substance but is a synthetic man-made material. It is a type of plastic that is made from ethylene (found in crude oil) and chlorine (found in regular salt). When processed, both the substances are combined to form Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) resin, or as is commonly referred to - Vinyl.

I once made an entire chess set from ear wax, cheese , some cloth, bread and a piece of string.
Using wood or plastic harms our planet. By using other materials we can really make a difference to the environment . You can see my pieces here:
