I live in Texas as well. I used to live in Houston (nice place) but i only have been to the Houston Chess club once. What i didn't like about it is the main emphasis is on rated tournament games and sometime i like to play casual nonrated games. This was a few years ago so i don't know if it is still the same. You should never be in tears for any post you read on this (or any) site. If it upsets you just play with chat off. Anyways good luck to your mother and really you might want to change your avatar if the comments bother you.

In honesty, most male chess players I have known do not exactly exhibit many social skills period and find women an enigma. When players go to OTB tournaments, there are barely any 'older' female chess players (because most girls give up chess in late teens), so a pretty female player is obviously a rarity.
Male chess players that flirt with female players like to think that because they have a similar interest, then this is good enough!? Quite laughable really. I have had girlfriends that have never played or are remotely interested in my chess achievements or my droning on about some great game I played. My wife just thinks chess is a waste of time away from her and the family, and you know what, unless you're a GM earning a living from chess, she is absolutely right!
Treat the remarks as a compliment providing they are not rude ones.
