Why do people think en passant is cheating?

I mean, if you play chess, you know it is a rule. So why do people think it is cheating?

Not many people think it is cheating actually.

The only people who do are people who are chess newbies, or people who play chess but live under a rock wink.png

Most of the 'HIS PAWN HACKED' stuff are just jokes xD. It's actually very fun to take part in those jokes, trying to prank people that you actually don't know en passant

NikkiLikeChikki
But it *is* cheating.

@NikkiLikeChikki it’s *not* cheating

Because it goes against the principles and logic of chess

It doesn't if you understand the history of chess and how changes have been made to pawn movements wink.png

Probably because it's always surprising when it does happen.  Pretty much (unless a sacrifice) always a surprise, by definition.

Happened to my frustration the other day.  But I accept the rule and the logic behind it.

Ubik42
There shouldn’t be anything surprising about it once you have played enough to know how all the pieces move.

Surprising moves are the ones that look suicidal, until you have a chance to look deeper and realize your only option is “resigns”.
WoodyTBeagle

My point was that if you move your pawn two spaces and it gets taken en passant it was (definitionally) a surprise otherwise  you would have made a different move - whether it should be or not is a totally different matter.

But it happens pretty infrequently.  I think in over 500 games I've been surprised by en passant move twice and played it once.  I think there were two other times I could have played en passant, but passed because I had a better move.

Chrismoonster

Those who think en passant is cheating don't know the en passant rule propperly

DreamscapeHorizons

Because they r very low level players. Kind of like bullies that start fights and get broken ribs from a kick, then they claim ur cheating because they're a very low level fighter and they just act tough.

Those chess players r the same way. I bet the ones complaining about en passant r bragging about how good they r.

mister33j

its because they dont know how en passant works, brainlessly hackuse you for using en passant

What? This makes no sense.

Of course it does.  If someone wasn't expecting something to happen, and it happened, its a surprise!
