Why do you let pedestrians stand in the middle of rush hour traffic?

People with ISP connections or computers that don't meet the minimum speed/connection requirements to reliably interface with the live chess (realtime) should be restricted somehow, or people should be given the choice as to whether to play them with foreknowledge of the situation.

If it sounds mean, it isn't.  It's just reality.  It is just honest.  It is just fair, and it is reasonable.

You don't let a pedestrian stand in the middle of busy traffic if they don't happen to have a vehicle, even if you feel sorry for them.  It doesn't benefit anyone.  It's a losing proposition for all involved.

If they have sporadic reliability, then expose a statistic that reflects the current % of disconnects, trends, etc...  And let people filter.  If everyone chooses not to play people with a high rate of disconnects, it tells you what the will of the live chess community really is, and chess.com should honor that.  But maybe it would work out well if you just let everyone make informed decicions about who to play in advance, including information about their connection reliability and extreme disconnect frequency and dynamically amortized trends.

Where's my thesaurus?

Putting that 20pound book away, I agree on a level. While I believe having the choice in the hands of the people driving, it may also ruin chess for some people. Regional play, not actual servers, but a stronger chance for two players to hook up they have decent connections to one another would go a long way.

The other issue is, that by making exceptions for people with weak connections by allowing them to enter the mainstream regardless of their hobbled vehicles, as a metaphor, the people who do deliberately disconnect and leave people hanging are also enabled, which is really really bad.  So it enables multiple disservices to everyone to allow it for anyone without providing a better heuristic.

Well i know i am guilty of using my phone to play live when i know i don't have a very good signal, or God forbid I have to use my phone to take a call. But i pay for this discretion by losing the game and my rating drops like panties on prom night. That should be punishment enough but man it feels good to squeak out a win in spite of all the lag and distractions... I like to imagine somewhere on the other side of the world a guy is standing on the coffee table in his doctors waiting room to get reception because he so desperately wants to play me too.

Well chess.com should provide a means for you folks to sniff each other out and play by informed agreement, understanding your mutually compromised positions, and the risks you'll be taking relative to one another.  It's irresponsible to play someone who wants to play real live speed chess with the basic connectivity on a par with the paradigm.  Of course you don't know, the option is available to you, so I'm not blaming you for taking advantage of it.

Those that disconnect on purpose should have a true seperate system to stopper any such action. On a site I played on ages ago, these people would eventually disconnect so often that they would automatically have a heightened chance of playing against similar players. Like would play like. These same players would also have their disconnect level shown as a percentage and you would have the option of opting out by move eight without any negative effects on you.

Of course, this caused some minor issues of players blundering and leaving and thus abusing the system. But that was far less frustrating than those who leave you hanging. Thus if your connection was decent, you had no reason to worry.

No.  I believe in the golden rule.  Of course locks are designed to keep honest people honest, so chess.com has a huge role in all of this by providing a mechanism to prevent the abuse.

You are a class act sir, giving your opponent your undivided attention because you want them to do the same so you can beat them at their best, whatever it is exactly you are lobbying for i hope you get it, it does make sense and i cant see any downside, but in my mind i just imagine all disconnectors are poor sports and their disconnection is a "tap out" victory by submission. My great play tested their charector and they went crying to their mommy... i do hate it when im slightly losing to a higher rated player and they disconnect while im in deep thought... it makes me feel like my game is such BS they'd rather lose than waste their time.... eh?! they are probablly just texting while updating their facebook status and got an important call... it always seems to come full circle right?

I'm guessing that you haven't spent much time in Asia.

That is unfortunate.  Unfortunately I have neither the money, access, nor the qualifications to fly a Lear Jet, much as I'd like to.  But I don't think someone who pities me should loan one to me to try out just now.
