Why does chess attract so many beta males?

Wasn't Alpha that kid in the Li'l Rascals?

BonTheCat

Funny this. People are being obnoxious pricks all over the place, and you guys seem to think chess players are insecure beta males. Someone mouthing off after losing at sports is hardly unusual, and the better the player, the worse the loser they tend to be.

TickTricknTrack

I really don´t see a big connection between being a alpha/beta (Whatever your definition is) and good/bad sportsmanship. You might even say that poor losers act the way they do because they are overly ambitous. And being ambitious is rather an alpha trait than a beta one.

Chess is a great hobby to include socially awkward or physically disabled persons in a society (talking about OTB chess, not online chess). That explains why some persons from the outside see chess as a hobby for nerds. And they might be right, but IMHO this is clearly a good thing! (And obviously that does not mean, that every chess player is a kind of freakhappy.png )

I would even say, that chess players used to be pretty fair losers compared to the average non-chess-player. (Hell, whenever I am playing games with non-chess-players, half of them discusses, why they only lost due to bad fortune and at least one person is so pissed, that he leaves much earlier than he would otherwisegrin.png But chess players are used to losing and know how to act appropriately (even if they hate losing as well).

Online chess is different than OTB chess. Obviously most users are writing anonimously, which makes it easier to act like a jerk. And secondly in online chess there are a lot of players, who just started playing. (In a chess club most members are playing in clubs for years.) So when a relativ beginner with a rating of <1000 starts insulting his opponents, I would not call him a "typical chessplayer". (There is a good chance, that when he stays around for years, he will accept that losing is part of the game and will improve his behaviour)

There are so many bad losers in chess. Even all the way up to GM level. *cough Nakamura *cough.

What is it about this game that attracts the vindictive and the petty? The type that will sit there and let their clock run down because you're up a piece?

I have a theory that its because most of us aren't very strong physically. So we play chess which is a perfect way to be passive aggressive against other males without the threat of ever being punched in the face.

No. I know 10+ Beta males that don't play chess to be passive aggressive. If that's an issue to you, you're problem. Plus, bad loses ARE NOT beta males, which you're practically implying. Heck, I see my alpha males be more toxic.

Thee_Ghostess_Lola

they say that castration anxiety is kinda responsible for sending guys into the beta life. not sure. i have my own set of issues on focus.   ::/

okay. saying this and gone from this thread. just one persons perspective & i hope this sheds some lite for those in want.

ive met big-strong guys full of fear and skinny-little guys not. and when i say fearless i dont mean dumb-fearless or mental-ill fearless. so size doesnt matter (in more ways than one - trust me).

yvanoseki

Yeah, sure. Using all your brain power to just crush an opponent's will while he's trying to do the same is real effeminate.

Move along, muscle loser.

The most impressive muscle is the brain.

You_play_well

Baby, can I just interrupt everyone by saying I've made luuurve to more laydeez than the whole of chess dot com combined.

Janez60

I think it atracts all kind of people; sharp minded, slow, strong and weak alike...Everyone can join and have some fun, that's what ratings are all about, right ? tongue.png

....out.

Maybe somewhere, sometime somebody tried to click a naked picture of him with his immature balls.

What are Alpha, Omega, and Beta males? I have honestly never heard this term used in Finland.

Alpha Male: Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis, someone strong and attractive. Beta male: the rest of us. Omega male: no Idea (maybe Trump?)

Abhinav

How can Trump be an omega male?

TickTricknTrack

whatever you think of Trump, it really makes no sense to classify him as a beta (or worse). Betas are the guys with no self esteem and no success in life you have never heard of. (Obviously this topic is much more complex than that, so there are exceptions)

YesPromise

What if ^0^ .. "People of success" as you call them are the few examples of individuals with irreversibly damning, deeply rooted inferiority complex, which "success" (trough the overlight, incogitant definition) is a tool for concealing.

Totally agree. People being sore losers is hardly unusual, but in chess you typically only have yourself to blame.
