Why does society hate chess?

Sigh. I just find it interesting that we bash the present but we would probably hate our life if we were transported, right now, into the past. Precisely because of all of the things right here in the present we take for granted until we have to live without them.

We practically define what it is to live differently now (in fact this probably happens every 50 years or so). It seems naive to me to think that adjusting is just a matter of "eliminating a few conveniences."

Soceity does not hate chess.

Soceity hates chess players.

As a member of soceity I often look at serious chess nerds and think " there but for the grace of God go I "

I think " I too could have been a moron with nothing better to do on a sunny day than study some useless stuff from a stuffy book just so that in a billion years from now I will still not make GM , or IM or even NM "

btw stuckrecordenti I have never heard such complete drivel in my life, your posts are great for those in need of a good colon flush but for the rest of us your suedo-intellectual rambling are beyond enduring, they are on par with mocromoron's posts.

For those who dream of living in a past age...chances are, that those who actually did "live"  during said time  who gladly have traded all to live in the present age...bidding good riddence to the wretched past.Prior to the modern era,the best,short-description of  life in the past (say,4000bc--1900 ad) was "brief, violent, painful".For centuries at a time ,life for the common folk of the western world hardly changed at all,and most of the time it was uniformly a hard exsistance. The past is another country...nice to vist, dreadful to stay.

exactly badger_dong all this crap about poets and painters and our wonderful foundations is so boring.

Only poets, normally the unpublished ones will tell you at lenght how great and deep poetry is.

What has poetry ever contributed to soceity...nothing.

same with chess , what does chess contribute to keep the wheel of progess turning....nothing.

Costing economies trillions of dollars in loss of productive time because your office manager is playing blitz online with his buddies.

as soon as people start befriending me I am going to start an anti-poetry movement and root out this evil from the site once and for all.

I think the biggest difficulty would be adjusting to the different culture.

What are you thinking the biggest difficulty would be?

There are just things that we take for granted so much that they're a part of what we view as life. If we didn't have things like tv for example we'd probably think there is something important missing in the world (as people who have experienced tv and more advanced things). Some kind of avenue of inter-communication would be lost with the world, making us more out of touch. Sure it can be dealt with, but you sure as hell don't want to, and the people back then didn't want to.

I mean yeah living more simply would encourage communication in different ways, but that's just making the best out of a crappy situation. The way it is now I can even be "connected" to people as random as the Kardashians.

Indeed that's another point. People were killed a lot more. And who knows, that person could be you.

Because it exposes false values and how flawed people's thinking really is.  It requires a scientific, objective outlook combined with specialized knowledge that makes people feel inadequate.

People also like to hold onto their delusions of superiority, I have defeated both Ivy leaguers (casual player) and mentally disabled (borderline retardation) and were approximately the same level of ease, if you have the incorrect approach to chess you'll go down in flames.

Also, the levels of technique required to correctly play the endgame is intimidating, even Bobby Fischer lost a drawn minor piece endgame to Boris Spassky and Anand lost a drawn rook endgame to Carlsen!

also modern life involves some people who are so full of crap it takes them half a page to articulate how clever they think they are.

Avatar of Solastalgia

no,see ,I was trying g to point out how concerned you are with looking clever but that you are so full of crap it takes you half a page of spewing your weirdo anger and resentment mixed in with your horrible wit and pseudo-intellectual nonsense to basically just point out what a sad and lonely individual your are.

I like it, I am sending you a friend request right no my man.

Avatar of Solastalgia

Fiveofwords ....it has been 9 minutes already, did you get my friend request?

Avatar of Solastalgia

is that a "no" or a " definite maybe" ?

Avatar of Colin20G

I've never seen a chess hater in my whole life, although there are many people who are indifferent to the game. But that's not the same thing.

Avatar of Solastalgia

Colin why would you choose this fragile moment between me and fivewords to get back on topic....have you no regard or respect for the way my hand of frienship and warmth has just been slapped into the cold ashes of whatever you call that place where friend requests go to die?

Avatar of Solastalgia

Which is a terribly rude thing to say to colin btw , he only voiced his opinion

Avatar of Solastalgia
