Why Don't Players Resign?

I may be old school, but we used to resign when we were in absolutely lost positions. I play many games where my opponent has only their king yet they keep playing. Why?

What sort of time control? I typically do not resign in blitz, and sometimes not in rapid depending on how much time remains. Time crunch can cause a lot of problems for people, and stalemates, or even losing blunders can occur.

Stalemate. And your's school is an old school, beauces at once, my opponent has 13 point advantage, and I won by checkmate

Completely lost with ample time left on the clock for the opponent is just resignable.

Completely lost but with a chance to win on time is never resignable.

"Completely lost but with a chance to win on time is never resignable."

So ... the goal is to win ... not play good chess?

😂😂 Get over it. Some people are like that. I quite like the idea of playing till mate because at my level it's very rare to get a good checkmate against the lone king.

yes, the goal is to win, that's the name of the game, what kind of odd person resigns when the game is winnable? there's a clock there for a reason.

I think in shorter time controls, players tend to go for the flag and are less likely to resign. They also hope you will blunder. In longer time controls, players resign more often because it's clear they will lose in some cases. But I do enjoy when they don't resign and I can get the checkmate.

also, there are times when I feel like my opponent deserves to see mate on the board, especially if it's going to be a beautiful sequence or set up.

"Gullible kids listen to bad coaches who tell them to never resign. It's a thing. You'll just have to mate your opponents and show them who's boss."

Yes, I hear this a lot from YouTubers and Twitchers.

rapid game and my opponent ran out of time. Why would we resign, if we have a chance to win?
