Why I hate irregular openings

Sort:
pdve

It's not because I cannot exploit them. It's just that I get so disgusted I don't want to spend any time working out the refutations since the moves are obviously bad. And so as my rating suffers I face more and more low rated players whose deviations are even worse, leading to more disgust.

ManlyLadyLumps

Right, so you hate irregular openings because you want other people to do all the thinking for you, and just play along a known variation for as long as you can, instead of actually playing chess?

If the moves are so obviously bad, finding the refutations would be easy and your rating would be fine

colinsaul

I am aware that doing so is tough. You could use your frustration to work on your opening theory and work out how to open better and exploit the bad moves in irregular openings better. Whatever game the opponent plays it's up to you to beat it.

Why are the moves obviously bad? Maybe low rated players use irregular openings to get you into a bad frame of mind.

Phylar

Furthering that, you are playing the wrong game if you get disgusted by off-good deviations and are unwilling to work out refutations when in a situation.

i think it depends on the thought  process...

some people play good opening and make bad moves on purpose to unbalance the position, i think its ingenious and very interesting on that occasion.

but then again maybe its only my imagination playing tricks on me.

melogibbo

yeah, half the fun should be working out the refutations.  To be honest, a lot of the time I can't wait for the opening to finish and get to the middlegame, that's where I feel you can get some original moves going on.  I don't just wanna copy book moves that are already worked out, kinda boring.

i try and work hard on my chess. i go through middlegame books and try and understand the nuances of most openings. then when somebody play 1.e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4. Qxd4?! then I get disgusted and want to resign in disgust.

CapAnson

I like irregular openings (by my opponents) because I know right from the start I'm not going to get blitzed by some theoreticaly line I haven't kept up with.

Resign then. Do yourself a favor - be happy.

Alexm421

I don't get it why do you qxd4 is bad?

TetsuoShima

he says resign because enjoying life is more important than playing chess when you dont enjoy it.

K-Sergey

Obviously bad moves from opponent suppose to be obviously good thing for you. Your chances to win going up. If you can not punish bad moves - you just get frustrated because you are not good enought in unknown land. Chess - is not only memorizing - it is thinking process.

molokombo

i guess this is the game in question... http://www.chess.com/livechess/game?id=554089862

the only reason i can think for hating this is that it doesn't allow you to just copy the moves you have memorised in whatever pet line you feel your opponent should be playing into, therefore making all of your time studying it a waste.

a solution to this would be to not spend so much time memorising lines.

This.

Many moves in the opening which are not standard are perfectly playable.  If Carlsen played them he'd still beat you! Under 1800 you can get away with all sorts of stuff in the opening.

pdve

i just hate it when players play bad moves IN THE OPENINGS. It doesn't give me any satisfaction to win from an opening advantage. It's just not worth my time.

bean_Fischer

What is regular and irregular openings? I haven't seen any of them.

You must mean popular and not moves. Who cares?

K-Sergey

I may guess that you do not have satisfaction to win from opponent's mistake? But there is - no mistake - no win in chess. Or mistakes form say move 10th or 15th OK to you. No offence, but I am seriously wandering.

pdve

i mean i hate it everytime i play the sicilian and the fool plays 2.Bc4

Why are they not fighting?
