Why I think blitz is a terrible thing.

After over a decade of playing online I've come to realize that blitz is generally a terrible idea. It has nothing to do with hurting standard - unless you play professionally who cares about a small alleged difference, it's supposed to be about fun and to relax. There is one reason that makes the fun element of it suspect though, that is:

There is no instinctive drive to stop.

That's the entire reason blitz is a terrible thing in your life. After one hour of playing you may as well have just started your first game. Arguably, there's no sense of satisfaction at all, so it just kills your time.

If you play a standard game of chess, that takes effort. That involves some emotion. You're not going to just start up a 30/30 game of chess out of the blue. Even if you had plenty of time it's a commitment. Your natural instinct that it's now time to move on to something else kicks in.

With blitz it's too easy to just keep playing. You always feel like you're doing something.

I wonder if that's an issue of blitz or an issue with the blitzer. It's kind of like blaming McDonalds for eating too much fast food.

I feel perfectly content stopping after 30 minutes of blitz.

Definitely agreed here, DrCheckevertim. Blitz can fulfill you or hurt you depending on how you use it.
