I think the relative weakness of the king in chess reflects historical awareness that "kings" were often little more that figureheads manipulated by others who held the real power.
The king is not weak. It's forced to hide and retreat because its capture ends the game. If there was not such a key piece and the game was just all about winning material, for example, a piece with the king's powers would be quite useful even in the middlegame.
The king isn't that weak tbh. It just cannot move to squares attacked by the pieces of the opposite color. If the king and its pieces cannot save it from capture, then it is checkmate.
