Why isnt Chess more friendly?

I once had an opponent who kept saying hi and asking questions all throughout the game. I would have said hi back except that I was still too stupid to realize that there was, in fact, a way for non-premium members to chat.
Well as the game went on he started beating me quite badly, and then he went from friendly to being annoying and making fun of me every time he made a good move or I made a bad move.
Thus, it was quite satisfying when I pulled off a swindle at the end of the game and won by checkmate after being down 17 pawns in material. 
This guy was actually a good sport about it though. He graciously friend requested me and I accepted, so it was all in good fun.

This made me laugh, but don't worry, I'm sure we've all done similarly stupid things! It took me months to figure out how to start a new thread after the new format arrived. I just couldn't find the button!

I'm a bit confused. Chat as a separate function, along with Friends, and Games, etc. might be for members only, but chat (lower case) during a game in the chat area is not just for members, is it? I chatted in that place when I wasn't a member.
