Why most of the great chess players are jews?

A  thankless job, indeed.  But we thank you still.

Thanks!

Both environment and heredity are important factors in determining intelligence. The hereitability of intellegence is somewhere in the 0.5 to 0.8 range, according to the majority of published peer-reviewed research (it varies by the kind of intellegence being measured).

A community is not only defined by what it does, but also by what it allows. Well done solskytz.

There are no significant biological differences in Jews than in any other socially constructed group of humans.

So would you explain the high rate of Tay-Sachs disease in Ashkenazi Jews as being due to them having a supportive community that comes together for friends and family? Same for Neimann-Pick disease. Or Familial dysautonomia? Gaucher's disease?

Non-Significant difference. Those are just hereditary traits. Nothing to do with people being superior to others. I didn't say there weren't genetic differences, but that there were no significant differences.

IE meaning that no genetic difference is responsible for an ethnic jew to be better at chess than another. To say otherwise is bad science and racist.

Intelligence is a hereditary trait to a significant extent. Several of the recessive genetic diseases that are very overrepresented in the Ashkenazi operate by messing with neural growth and function. Some have as one of their effects increased neural connectivity, which some studies have shown to be associated with higher intelligence.

There is speculation that people who carry but do not have these diseases may still get some of the good effects (like enhanced neural connectivity). More research is needed.

Intelligence is not a hereditary.

For the diseases, you are talking about having a recessive allele for sickle-cell anemia, which, in sub-saharan africa is a naturally occuring defense against malaria (because when a cell gets infected with malaria, it triggers the sickle-cell response and destroys th cell).

There is nothing specifically biological about the jewish people that would make them be better at chess. I can't believe we're even having this argument. This is a completely racist thread and should be deleted.

All the positives from the jewish people come from having stable lives, familial monetary support, and emotional support. ALSO, Like any other group of socially constructed people to put humans into arbitrary subgroups, they have their stars. If ANY other racial subgroup was as close knitted as the jewish people are, we'd be seeing the same things occur with them.

Now, can we just end this racist non-sense about biological genetic differences making people good/bad at chess?

Some serious racism and sexism in these forums really needs to be addressed.

I think that  part of the answer as mentioned above is the close knit family group that gives stability and encouragement to family members. This is part of the heliolithic culture. Asians in general come from the  same heliolithic culture and they tend to excel in whatever they do. Anand for example comes from this culture. I am sure that we will see more Asians, especially people from China and India,  in the future becoming chess champions and winning Nobel Prizes and so forth.

There ya' go again.  What the hell is heliolithic supposed to mean.  A culture born on rock, raised on sun?

Crazychessplaya

Maybe he means "patriarchal" as opposed to "matriarchal"? Hell, it may even mean "Annunaki."

Sorry, this comet is full. You'll have to wait for the next one.

All the best geologists that I know come from Texas.  Texas must be an heliolithic culture?

iamdave220

I've only read a couple pages here but has DrFrank explained why he thinks chess and Jewish culture are heliolithic given that neither are Egyptian in origin or have anything to do with sun worship?

bigpoison

Wouldn't that be heliocratic or heliolatrous?  Rocks just gotta' have something to do with heliolithic.

I'm gonna' rock until the sun goes down!

netzach

Til the sun sets behind The Sphinx.

I'm not familiar with the word heliocratic but heliolatrous is definitely related. Heliolithic has to do with sun worship and Egyptian culture though, depending on the context. Large stones are a part of it too, so you're not wrong.

<IM Pfren> I like your comment :-)

However, the temple of Solomon is historical fact, with lots of archeological and historical proof behind it - testimonies of contemporaries and more. Judaism was a very alive religion in the middle east, around 3,000 years ago, and more. This cannot be put in doubt.

Not that it has anything to do with the subject under discussion, of course - but I thought I'd just point it out. This is no fiction.

A 3,000 year old salmon that got away? That's a whopper of a tale.

But I've got a transfer in Dallas in three hours!

I think Jews are better at chess because they had the time for it.  They aren't out trying to convert everyone to their religion like some of the other kids who ride their bicycles to my house, knock on my door, and try and talk to me about Jesus, I tell 'em, boys, you wanna meet Jesus, you should join the Army, that will teach you about suffering and passion and prayer, I don't need no pansy bicyclist hippy pacifists to tell me about Jesus.  But the Jewish people, they got it right, instead of buggin' everyone trying to convert people they use their pleasure time doing interesting stuff like Chess.  That's why they're so good, they got their priorities straight!

einstein99

Jesus was a Jew, maybe he played chess! Wait a minute, I think he invented the game!
