The best chess players deserve the opportunity to represent their country at the Olympics;same as shooters,archers,runners,swimmers,etc...

"Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy found in effort, the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles."

The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised without discrimination or any kind, in a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.

The Olympic Movement is defined also by the numerous activities in which it engages, such as:

  • Promoting sport and competitions through the intermediary of national and international sports institutions worldwide.
  • Cooperation with public and private organisations to place sport at the service of mankind.
  • Assistance to develop "Sport for All".
  • Advancement of women in sport at all levels and in all structures, with a view to achieving equality between men and women.Help in the development of sport for all.
  • Opposition to all forms of commercial exploitation of sport and athletes.
  • The fight against doping.
  • Promoting sports ethics and fair play.
  • Raising awareness of environmental problems.
  • Financial and educational support for developing countries through the IOC institution Olympic Solidarity.

I think there's a limit to how many corrupt organizations can be affiliated at once. To allow in FIDE they'd probably have to balance it out by expelling an equally corrupt group like FIFA, and football is going to win over chess every time.

Weird, you would think that at least on a chess website people would support the idea of chess in Olympics. But apparently that's not the case here.

I'm in favor of chess in the Olympics. We have a great sport and should compete in the world's greatest sporting event.Every 2 years is perfect.

Speed chess requires some physical skill, especially the 1 minute bullet games. But even then it would be hard to argue that the players are "athletes". You don't need to be physically fit to play chess, you just need enough manual dexterity to move the pieces at hit the clock quickly.

I entered the forum to start the same topic, but will write here so as to continue the discussion and not start another one.
First of all, "Arguments" like the ones written by justchekin99 are ridiculous and should be ignored, I've read a Topalov interview a couple of months ago regretting the same thing we are discussing, so according to justchekin99's words, Topalov is an idiot and a moron. Unfortunately, the interview is in Spanish, but I can search the link, post it and translate it if someone needs proofs.
Secondly, I knew someone would say "chess already has its olympics" like the Italian on the first page, but there is a big difference between both of them. Regular olympics are seen by the whole world, chess olympics only by chess fans. Same thing applies to other sports which aren't popular as basketball, tennis, etc. If chess reaches such a massive tournament like the olympics it will encourage people to play it, including children, who nowadays are introduced into the game only if their relatives wish to teach it.
Finally, some trouble may arise involving grandmaster draws, but this can be solved as well organising matches where draws doesn't count. It only requires good will by the IOC.
PS: Tokio 2020 will include SURFING and SKATEBOARDING, chess deserve it too.

you are right, indeep99👍👍 i read that chess will be added in 2020Olympics.

Thhe IOC says it's a sport,so that settles it.

Maybe if they combine in with skeet shooting it could be a sport like the biathlon.

It might be considered a sport under its own analogous form of a "sport" - similar to how League of Legends is considered an esport.
