Plenty of people logged on recently: https://www.chess.com/club/team-china
No it is actually because in China you need VPN to log in. Not too convenient, though there are some.
Recently I played, I see there is no China chess player? Is it because China started the covid or what?
Irrefutable logic.
I'm currently in China and I log into Chess.com almost every day without using a VPN. Yes, you need a VPN to do almost anything important, but not for chess.
Oh interesting I think it was blocked in the past but now I guess it is open.
Actually it’s a good idea if chinese must use vpn to join here. because if Ding wins WCC, at least 700 millions Chinese users will pour in! Is CC ready for them?
700 million is like half of China....
Yep half of china. I assume the other half are farmers and they are too busy farming so probably not interested in chess.
I'm Chinese and can tell you that chess is gaining traction in China, but traditionally Chinese people play Chinese chess and go (my Chinese friends tend to play those, and my search for a chess partner among them has been fruitless so far.) I expect the momentum to continue in the near future though.
The rural population is more like 37%
oh ok in that case maybe only 200 millions new users will join from China after Ding wins WCC. that’s still a lot of people!
Will they bring their own servers?
No cause most of the population dont got internet or a computer and even if u did there are only 22 things u can do. No foreign sites allowed in NK.
I wouldn't recommend using a VPN to access chess.com in China because China's security levels are pretty much high; if you get caught using a VPN then the police might turn up.
Evidence found from Google:
"The punishment regarding VPN usage falls for companies that do not use government-approved VPNs or companies that don't have relevant approvals from the state to use VPNs. Chinese citizens in the VPN business can also face fines or jail time if they don't have government clearance."
