Woot! Just won a free Chess.com membership
Funny you mention that. I am also a musician, and am finding that I prefer instructional music videos over books. I like reading conceptual stuff, but when it gets to being very detail-oriented and micro-analytical, like so many chess books (and music books) tend to be, I get really bored.
I think the point (and the point that Royalbishop is making) is that the best place to get knowledge from is the one that inspires are allows each person to INTERACT with that knowledge. Some people interact with videos more easily than books. Some people interact better with books, and some with audio.
I become very passive when watching a video and don't interact at all. However when I read a book (or listen to music) I become very interactive. stopping to test something I just read, even stopping for days at a time to work on that one subject etc. etc.
I also find my imagination engaged more with a book. My imagination turns off when watching a video. Same goes for movies in general. I almost always prefer reading a book to watching a movie. I am just more engaged in the story. Same with going through a chess game in a book. However that is just me.
But royalbishop hit on the main point; It does not matter what media form we get our information from. We each need to get it from the form that will engage us the most to INTERACT with the knowledge.
Wow i wish i could get that in my tourneys
