Would flowers in vases at chess tables cheer up chess tournaments?

Perhaps if there was more pagentry involved in the sport more of the world would take notice and get involved, and imagine how much more pleasant candles and flowers at the chess tables would make the sport.  Little touches like that are often overlooked, but add so much to the ambience and nature of the experience.

I'm not sure about flowers, but little touches do go a long way.

I provide equipment for my tourneys, and I decided some time ago to buy a wooden set to use at the top board, while everyone else plays on the standard roll up vinyl.  I've been surprised how many people have commented on how cool that was.

It really is surprising how far something small like that can make a difference.

Candles and flowers?  Maybe not so much.  Wrong theme, and practical issues, but decor in general definitely makes a difference.

Now that I think about it.....tablecloths.  I can make some really cheap.  I think that might seriously be on the agenda for the next event.

(I'm also not sure if you are serious.)

Flowers yes, definitely.

No. Adding color to the room is fine. But in a tournament you will have too many people complaining about distractions so neutrality at the tables would likely be best.

Awkward. And some players are allergic to flowers.

For what it's worth, I was kidding about flowers or candles, but within the realm of low-distraction aesthetic improvements, I'm sure it would not hurt at all to make from.  Casinos know how to bring in the business in terms of comfortable plush environments.  Something like that minus the distracting noises and lights would probably bring more people around because it would be pleasant and comfortable.  It would bring a more cultivated air to chess, which is the intellectual sport of the elite after all.  You might even be able to get a cable TV channel willing to do coverage of real events if held at more palatable venues, which would be *really* cool.  That would draw more of the public in, *if* it was very well (professionally) presented  and the commentators didn't just sound like nerds out of highschool.
