True. Almost as truthy as a good Rocky Patel cigar, some J&B on the rocks and a game of chess...all at the same time.

Oh come on, that's been done to death!

I think it's corny as hell to have it stuck in all the boxes.

I knew some people would think the: "Please be relevant, helpful, and nice!" comment was completely irrelevant.

Oh yes, i see what you mean..

I look at them differently. I think nerds are generally those who are intelligent in the realm mainly of "book smarts", not usually the best looking of people, and they don't have certain social savvy that would make them even the least bit desireable sexually.

I do think that would describe many chess players, but I think some of the best ones GM's/IM's, though they may have certain problems, mainly, being introverted, having some self esteem issues, and often being misunderstood, aren't what I think of as the epitome of a nerd.

I think one of the things that really causes someone to be extremely nerdish, is that they don't have certain self esteem issues, because they are so socially inept, they have no clue how people see them. I think some of the more intuitive people who are called nerds by others, based on things such as, the way the dress, or their own idea of a nerd in terms of physical attractiveness.

I don't really put Fischer and Kasparov into that catergory of the epitome of a nerd. I think they were well aware of the thoughts of others regarding their social status. I think this allows them and other people like them to be able to manipulate social situations to avoid the ridicule that the true nerds walk right into.

I think what people miss is that they are so intelligent and misunderstood, that people mistake their ways and they find themselves in frictious moments, that result in the appearance that they are manipulative and or assholesh. I had to have someone explain to me I was a prick. I told them I didn't see how I was. They told me what distinguishes a prick from an asshole was that, the asshole knows he pisses people off and doesn't care, but a prick isn't aware of it , because he tries not to, so much so , the people find themselves manipulated and don't really have a justifiable reason to lash out , because they are pissed off at being so manipulted, true nerds have no manipulation ability what so ever in my book. I would say I am more like Fischer or even Kasparov, than most people I have met, that I would consider an asshole.

Not all chess players are nerds.  There are gangsters and playboys with an appreciation for the game too.

Being introverted is NOT a "problem." Good lord.

I wasn't saying that I thought it was. I am very introverted. I am saying that many others in society that don't relate and look at it as socially clumsy and nerdish.

Ex. People used to make jokes about Eddy Van Halen being a dweeb because, he didn't make it a point to go out and try to get laid as a teen and early 20 something. I think He got the last laugh on that one.

Just because I don't prefer to be around people doesn't mean I don't know how to deal with them.

I think you misunderstood or didn't read my post very well.

I think some kings were maybe playboys, but I only give credit where they could've done it without their money or power. So I can't exactly call em playboys. As for them being gansters, umm...well, maybe sort of, but blood is thicker than water. So there were truly deeper concerns than just money, secretive power, and loyalties that didn't have the true binding nature of the royalty of our past.

I don't think I would exactly call them nerds either, but in all fairness with the playboy idea, what would they have been with their money and power stripped away. The better looking ones atleast would have beat the rap, most likely. So this particular definition doesn't fit, so I have to say that rulers, from supreme to the lesser, have also played this game, as well as hippies, bikers, criminals. I have seen a bunch of different types play chess and I wouldn't call them nerds.

Why would someone find it necessary to insult people they do not even know?

Lets discuss....

Is it because they are basically inadequate, trying to bolster their own fragile ego by insulting others?... hmmm I wonder.

Avatar of AndyClifton

I don't know...but maybe if you keep on insulting them, some sort of balance will be achieved. Smile

Avatar of Ruby-Fischer

Just asking a question. No insults there... unless anyone sees themselves as one of a group of people who insult people..   but then they wouldnt be "realising themselves as an individual" would they?

Avatar of AndyClifton

Not sure how calling somebody "basically inadequate" isn't an insult...but then, you're the boss. Smile
