First game almost always gets aborted?

This almost always happens: after I log in, I enter an arena tournament or choose my game parameters (time/rating gap) then start a game against an opponent. When I make my first move, it appears on the board, and then a short time later I get the message saying the game is aborted. Subsequent games seem to work okay.
What gives? Is my session quietly caching stuff in the background when I log in, then timing out on me?
