i've now looked at my games history in another window and it has this game recorded as I lost - what's going on here, is there something wrong with online playing?

You are referring to a so-called "Live Chess" game you played.
In live chess, due to move transmission times due to internet lag, it can happen that the clock is not showing the real time consumed by your opponent until you see his next move (so sometimes his clock shows to be ticking down, while in fact, the move transmission is still being done somewhere in the internet, so his real thinking time does not decrease during that time, of course.)
In that game, it says "game abandoned". So did you maybe leave that game before it was declared finished, which automatically is counted as a loss for the player who leaves?
