Help Setting Up Custom Games With Friends?

Hello!
I'm remarkably intrigued by the ability to set up custom games with different and custom pieces - I've got an idea for one where the central two pawns are replaced with Sergeant variants and the ones to the side of them with Soldier variants - but I can't for the life of me work out how to actually set up one of these and invite a friend to play it. I feel like I've looked at everything but must be missing something - could someone help me, please?
