Try "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess". Yeah, I know the name is bad, but the book is very useful. I'm currently working through it. It's highly rated on Amazon.com and has 58 reviews to give some idea what other people think of it. It can be had for about $10 depending on what kind of copy you want. Good Luck!
