how do I chat while playing live chess?

Not always but sometimes I get comments. I feel extremely rude for not being able to respond.  It's not that I don't want to I just don't know how.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Why would anyone want to talk during live chess?  I always suspect the opponent is obnoxiously trying to steal my time with chit chat.  Send me a message later.
