The settings pages were recently revamped. 
Visit https://www.chess.com/settings/themes instead. Choose the "Custom" theme, and under "Background", choose "Custom (upload)". Or, you can choose from one provided!

it would be nice to change only profile page background separately from playing hall background,you know it is distracting when you are playing,

Welp nope this wasn’t useful
I suspect the resolution and image size need to be scaled correctly for the image to be successfully accepted as the background, however I have no idea what those are supposed to be.
i want to change my profile background. plz tell me how to do that.
