Yep, notifications. Could be a message or tracked content.
My number meant someone had commented on a puzzle, that I had also commented upon

Same here.
If you move the mouse over to the pawn icon on the top left, you will see in the bottom of a menu that appeared right of the icon what notification type it was.
You can click on "Clear alerts" to remove all alerts (red numbers).

On the home page there's a little green pawn icon in the upper left corner. Mine always has a little number superimposed on it, and I can't figure out what that number is telling me. Can anyone enlighten me?
