yes, timepass1-5! I think the problem is exactly the one you reported in your post. I was playing on an iPad iOS 7.0. To me it was the first time I noticed this defect (it probably have happened before) this time it happened twice in two successive games ... It's confusing because you wait for the move of your opponent, and then it turns out that your last move (which you see on your computer) has not been recorded by the system, and it's your time that's running down, despite the fact that on your computer you see your opponent's time that runs down, VERY frustrating!
My opponent runs out of time ... and wins on time!
one time the lag went overboard by letting me make a move during my opponents turn.and apparently it was my turn so it was my move and stupid lag made me lose.i had yellow lag
And here's the official chess.com explanation:

I was looking for this problem because it has happened to me and I found this post, unfortunately I'm not the only lucky man! I don't understand if it is an opponent's fraud/hacking or a bug of this app ( happens only on my android app, the pc app is ok)
My oponent ran out of time many times (according to what I see) but he still plays comfortably!!
Whats wrong with this clock?
I might give up playing on Chess.com. My opponent's time ticks down as we await his/her move, then I lose as my time suddenly goes to zero and my opponent's time increases. Its not logical.

Sounds like you got disconnected.

You need a better internet connection.
the software is bad written, there is not synchronicity between clocks. period.

The server keeps the official clocks. If there is a connection issue between you and the site server, or processes on your system or local network cause short disconnects or packet retransmission, you can see issues. I won't say the client code couldn't be more robust, but the vast majority of issues are outside the site's control (other than potentially forgiving all lag/ disconnects)
This thread is very relevant. I have tried cache clearing, vpn connection refreshing browser, 100 meg connection, verified ping settings. Nothing will ensure that the time your clock says you have, is accurate.
I wait constantly for opponents to move, and it is clear that my waiting for them, is coming out of my time.
At least three times since August 2022, THIS YEAR, I was ahead in position, pieces and time, or part of the above, with plenty of time on my clock,
and the opponent running down to ZERO on his clock, as THEY WIN ON TIME ? Sometimes the time on both clocks, mine and opponents, reverses place a couple minutes before running out.
This is either on purpose, or a hack .... anyone find out ?
This happened to me in the last two games: suddenly my opponent doesn't respond, it's his turn, the time on his clock runs down to zero, I cannot do anything and when his clock is zero it's me that loses because of time (10 min)
