Suggestion for Greeter Games

Sort:
ADK

Hello, everyone. I wanted to suggest a little tack-on option for "Welcome to Chess.com" games. It would go in addition to the:

CHESScom: You have been matched to play with ADK, a volunteer Chess.com Greeter.

Your opponent might not be online right now! This kind of chess is called "turn-based" and is a little slower than regular chess, but your Greeter has been notified and will make their reply move soon! They can then answer any questions you might have about Chess.com.

After you make your move feel free to browse the site - you will automatically get an alert when your Greeter has moved!

I would like to have something similar to a personalized, automatic statement from ME that I would be able to select, pre-set, and/or change in the settings. This would enable me to say what I think is important about the site without having to repeat the same thing about 15x depending on how many stick around for the game. It would it to come directly after the usual automatic greeting from CHESScom. Now, this statement can range from anything from a simple greeting to a something a little bit more in depth. Here is one example:

JUST A SAMPLE (everybody's will be different) -- ADK: Hi. How are you doing? Well, first off,I'm not a computer. LOL I just wanted to clear that up before I introduced myself. My user name is ADK and my real name is Anthony W. So, welcome to chess.com and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask me. I have been here for over two years now so I know my way around the site pretty well. If I am not online, please feel free to browse around or look at common questions that can also be answered by clicking the Help & Support link at the bottom of every page. If you want, you can play more than one game at a time by either Creating a New Game or going through your Open Seeks. Well, this is just a brief overview to help you get adjusted to chess.com and I hope this message helps.

Good idea

I Love the idea, Ant. I'm guessing you too have experienced the patterns of the newcomers. This would help a lot.

Nice idea. No matter how many games I play, the opponents make the first move then time out. Typical.

Maybe a  AI bot, to answer questions when the greeter is not currently on the game?

After one or two comments, many of these guys give up if you don't answer immediately.

I like the spirit of the idea, but based on my (limited) greeter experience, I suspect that newbies are generally not reading the text already there--so I'm not sure more text would be of much help.

Great idea, and I think it would also be great to match the newcomers with someone from their country, so if they don't speak English that well, they could use help in their language :)

Yeah, definitely. LOL I wouldn't want to be matched to someone who spoke Spanish or something else when I only know English. : D My Spanish is a little on the rusty side, but I might get by with an English-Spanish translator by my side. LOL

An automated bot? How would that work in correspondence to what the new member is saying? It would be cool to have sentence recognition though. : )

How about if chess.com shortens that message because I, myself, and probably others too, do not like reading that very much?

Great idea!

Well, I chat to some friends on a Cellphone chat site (prodigits), and they have a bot there that can sustain a believable conversation. I think it's probably more keyword recognition than sentence recognition.

It sounds pretty neat to me. Now, I'm just waiting for the opinions from the staff.

Maybe when a new person signs up with Chess.com, there should be a box asking what their native language or country is. Then Chess.com could match them up with a person from their own country first to get them started.

I think they already do that, but I'm not quite sure. I've been matched up with people from all around the world, but they all seemed to speak English. Are we paired up based on what language we speak?
