tactics trainer

I think the tactics trainer is great, it is really starting to make a difference to my play. I think that the timer is a great idea as it really forces you to look deeply into the problem.

As for the difficulty, doesn't the type of problem adjust itself to your rating anyway?

Keep up the good work guys

Cheers

I really enjoy the tactics trainer as well.  My rating like many others has dropped precipitously over the past few days, but as was pointed out my original rating probably flattered me a bit much though my current rating has equally demoralized me a bit much.  Still, as a training tool it is highly enjoyable and educational.

My rating has dropped into the 500's.  Glad to hear that it was a problem in the program, but I can not seem to raise my level back to where it was before the program issue.  I seem to be stuck in the 500's.

ok. we found a REALLY big and nasty bug. jay will work on fixing it as soon as he is uncurls from a ball on the floor where he has been crying for the last hour. we'll get it fixed and then script a fix to everyone's ratings.

if you read this, send jay an encouraging message ;) he'll need it today :)

jay
I'm happy to report that the bug is fixed, and I've set everyones Tactics Trainer ratings to be equal to their best ever rating. I've also adjusted all the problems ratings since they were also corrupt. Thanks for all the reports on this issue.

jay wrote: My internet just dropped after a long posting, so this is a shorter synopsis of what I said. The time given on a problem is 2 times the AVERAGE time spent by all other users who SOLVED the problem. So....you are directly compared and competing against other users who solved a particular problem. We ARE working on a new feature for those that dont care about the competition, and just want to do tactics at their leisure, to disable ratings and timer, and select a min-max rating band for problems they want to do.

Out of curiousity, is this the average time of users that solved the problem on the first try, or just the average time of all users on the attempt in which they happened to solve it?  I'll often get a problem only after failing it a couple of times and usually quite quickly at that (as by then I have some good insight into what the solution isn't).  If these are included in the average then I would expect that it is actually understated compared to what it would be if it only considered those who solved it on the first try.

jay

Average time to solve a problem is calculated or adjusted only when a user passes a problem on their first attempt.

Glad to hear of the problem, I tanked also.

I was wondering what was going on,I thought I had forgotten how to play or something. My rating had hit 1747 on TT,then took a nosedive down to 1300-1400 range.

I was'nt making any grand achievements but now I feel like I just started playing chess, I cant see any clues I'm lost... rating plummeter too

yeh, ditto, it`s a tough set-up. As a relative beginner I would find it more useful if the analysis board was available throughout the exercises, not only after I`ve tried and failed. LOL

The other thing that would be nice is if the "Show Solution" button would work repeatedly. Right now, it only shows you the proper sequence once. If you want to see the sequence again, you're out of luck. Bit of a bummer, as the point is to drill these patterns into us by repetition.

But let me be clear that I think Tactics Trainer is wonderful, and a huge argument for upgrading to premium membership.

A few points:

1) Jay, you're the man, the frickin' man

2) I love the Tactics Trainer and want to give my thanks to Jay, Erik, and the rest of the staff who have fielded such an excellent (and fun!) resource.

3) I did a mate-in-7 problem last night that was only rated at 925. What!?! Anyhow, I'm assumed that Jay's miracle bug fix corrected the problem.

4) I'd like to have the option to turn the timer off, not get rated, and just evaluate my progess based on a pass/fail ratio. A story about Fischer--perhaps apocryphal--runs like this: a friend asked him how to improve his chess game, and Fischer replied, "Throw away the clock." Basically, that's what I'd like to see on the Tactics Trainer.

Chessstudent

thanks for fixing the problem JAY  :)

1600 at your adjustment, then lost 300+ points, Now, could you fix me?!?

It would be good to have the option to disable the rating and just have a timer to remember my speed and compare with others.I don't really care about the rating, but about time.

It is not obvious at first what is the goal in every puzzle:win or draw?

*faints* so that explains all the insanity the past few days (and why i'm suddenly at my best after being in the 500's). Best of luck perfecting the algorithm for those who care to remain timed, and even more luck in implementing a no-timer mode for TT. ~Looking forward to it :D!.

I have a question. How can I choose to solve the problems I WANT?
ozzie_c_cobblepot

The only gripe I have about tactics trainer is that there are some cooks. One problem had a 2-move mate from a certain point in addition to the solution (also a 2-move mate). I also have a slight problem with penalizing something which is technically winning (perhaps win of queen) while missing checkmate. There should be partial credit for those. (For example perhaps I won the queen, someone else delivered checkmate, but the third person blundered a knight - how should I get the same score as the person who blundered the knight?).

All in all, a great product. But - if I were a paying member I would spend too much time on tactics trainer. I guess that is ironic?

darkknight71
Hey Penguin(yes I know who you are Ozzie Cobblepot),the reason you don't get partial credit for taking the queen when you could have had checkmate is because you didn't find the BEST solution. But if there was indeed TWO solutions to the problem ,then I would agree with you,but sometimes I thought the same thing then I took another look at a problem and realized that there really was only one solution.
