@OP:
You'll only see that on old accounts. It means they closed their account. Maybe it was only in version 1? (chess.com is currently in version 3). But it doesn't mean they were cheating or abusive or anything.

For example here's an old account of mine @orangehonda

Closed in 2011... probably before most of you were born (lol)

These days when you close your own account it shows the grey X.

Inactive accounts (accounts people haven't logged into in years) appear as normal accounts. Nothing happens to them... and this is easy to check. Pick pretty much any common word, and it will be an old account that hasn't been logged into in years.
