Well, you are talking about e-chess, the OP was talking about Live, but, to answer your question, no, it's not mandatory, and chess.com doesn't read the responses, but, if you leave one, your opponent will see it.

Everybody deserves the freedom to spend their time how they like. If I've got 10 spare minutes to play chess and I want to play a 5 minutes each game, you're telling me I can't do that.
of you course you can, you just have to lose the game.
