A neat little trick you can use against people who won't resign in losing positions

1st advice: this tip OP suggested will not work on almost any stallers, especially if they are already unsportmanship themselves. They will be more happy if you do what OP suggested. And infact its time consuming. Instead play normally and report your opponent and move on. Its time consuming, I know, but it will save more time than the tip OP suggested. Thank you.

So you request good sportsmanship from your opponent, but you are trying to annoy him if he uses his time to think about a problem.

Wasting my time in a completely dead position isn't good sportsmanship, in fact it's even worse because they can just resign at any point to finish the game while I have to slowly run them down

My first post in other words:

You are not a good sportsman if you expect your opponent to resign because of your impatience.

Just my point of view.

I just don't get this.

If you've got a won position, and you really care about winning, why not just win it?

If you've got a won position and you're bored and want to do something else, just abandon the game and do the something else. (edit: though it would be courteous/nice to thank the opponent as you leave...)

Great idea. Thanks!

Why not save a few minutes of your life too? What fun do you have against slowly playing out a position against someone who is dead lost and has no way of winning, but they just slowly defend and drag out the game for like 5 more minutes for no reason? I know in your games your opponent probably has a higher chance to come back (this isn't an insult to your rating, it's just at 1500+ there are some positions where people will win 100% of the time) but up here it's just wasting both people's time and we both know it. Which is why they resign once they realize that you are going to play slowly to finish the game (which is ironically what your opponent is doing too)

This is not as effective as written. Many people aren’t sitting there watching the board doing that. If they know they are going to lose, they most likely are doing to you what you said. They are weakling away and making you wait for the win due to timeout instead of resign or checkmate. I guess some it makes some of these people feel better about getting beat. Honestly, just let them do what they’re going to do, report it as stalling/quitting games and move on. They get reported enough chess.com will do something.

I know a easy method of playing a game and I won the match by: . e5 2.Nf3. Nc6 3.Bc4. Nd4 4.Nxe5. Qg5 5.Nxf7. Qxg2 6.Rf1. Qxe4+ 7.Be2. Nf3#

Though you might be convinced that you will win, your opponent might be hoping you will get frustrated, make a mistake and enable him or her to achieve a stalemate. Just happened to me five minutes ago. I was ahead 8 points and wound up with a stalemate. My opponent outsmarted me. That's the second time in about 300 games. On the other hand, several times I have managed that same thing. Perhaps it is rude to agree upon times and then resent your opponents if they use their times as they see fit. When opponents stall, I just chill out and play with my cat.

This is considered stalling and u could get banned for it so stop. Those who don’t resign don’t appreciate it. Just stop.

I just realized that basically most people here won't be able to use this advice because games can basically go any way for people under like 1700, so I guess yall can just ignore this :/ sorry

So I've played many rapid games on this website, and throughout my journey I noticed that a lot of the time people will not resign when in completely lost positions for whatever reason. However I have came up with a simple trick you can do against these players that will usually result in them just resigning. Also this is intended for rapid and make sure you have enough time to do this. But what you want to do is, once your position is winning, you just want to leave the chess game and do absolutely nothing for like 2-3 minutes when it is your turn. Just open the forums or get some water or something like that while waiting. Trust me, it will piss them off SO MUCH. It's even better if you do it right after they make the mistake, like if they leave their knight hanging, you just leave and they angrily think to themselves "WHY IS MY OPPONENT NOT MOVING THE KNIGHT IS RIGHT THERE!!!!". Then they will usually just resign out of anger, or the 2-3 minutes will give them the time to realize that they are gonna lose and they will resign. And if they don't resign after like 2 minutes, just make a move and then start taking like 20-30 seconds on each move after that, especially if your next move is obvious. Trust me it will frustrate them so much and most of the time they will just resign

Edit: Also just to clarify some things, this is not intended as stalling. It just gives your opponent a bit of time for their logical reasoning to come back and realize they are lost and resign, it is mutually beneficial. If they want to continue the game, I will continue playing as normal. Also when people stall, they are dead lost and their 100% purpose is to waste your time, while in this you can also think of tactics and moves you can play so it's using your time efficiently

I don't think you read the post. Yes that works and I have the option to do that at any time, but it drags out the game for like 5 uneccessary minutes

POV: you're playing blitz

Snowchlobe

if i'm bored i sometimes use it as a chance to practice my basic endgames in time pressure that i haven't done in a while like 2 bishops v king.

besides your post is stupid. it might work some of the time. it might even save you five minutes on rare occasions. but my way works 100% of the time.

anaylze the game or play another game where i can actually learn... 5 minutes for each won game adds up too.

Snowchlobe
