They were parties in dorms.  Not many games but sometimes a crowd would look on at people playing blitz when blitzed.

Some alcohol can help a bit. You have a bit more fun and the more fun you have the more you win. Thats the golden rule of Chess.  Personally I quit drinking on the 28th of March. Alcohol ruined my life. I mean look at me, I am a full time chess website forum troll....

Kids....my advice....stay away from alcohol.

That's why I won't ever drink.

One drink is ok. My ELO drops by 300 after about beer 3.

why is everyone drinking and smoking nowdays?

Because people always have been drinking and smoking since the invention of drinking and smoking?

True.

But, like, it's bad

In chess, you always have to give up a square to get a square, and often life is the same way. While smoking and drinking is generally a net negative, it doesn't mean it's all negative.

For example, nicotine is heavily used in endurance sports. As a stimulant, it both increases endurance and decreases fatigue. They usually use smokeless varieties, since smoking can affect lung capacity, but I often wonder if vaping will become popular.

Alcohol decreases inhibitions. A small amount of alcohol increases creativity, because it makes you more willing to try things that you would normally dismiss. It also helps with focus for ADHD for some people, but the mechanism as to why is somewhat unclear.

Yeah, but your liver goes *splat*

And your life decreases.
