Hm, I'm quite new to live chess, and I'm wondering what I'm supposed to think if during an 15/10 game the chat tab tells me that the opponent just disconnected (in a somewhat critical position, in check), and this will be auto-resign after a timeout of 2 or 3 mins. Then, a few seconds before the timeout elapses, he reappears. His next moves were solid then, but nothing special you'd need an engine for.
Do these disconnects during live games happen automatically? Is it plausible that this was just by coincidence?
Yes. Some people have bad connections. It is quite possible they are doing everything they can to rejoin the game but weren't able to do it for several minutes.
I stopped playing slow time control games years ago because there were so many disconnections.
